Mărturia lui dr.Zev Harel (Herskovits)
Mărturia lui dr.Zev Harel (Herskovits), născut în Bârgău/dr.Zev Harel (Herskovits) vallomása, aki Kissikárlón született /The testimony of dr.Zev Harel (Herskovits), born in Bârgău(Romania today)
1938 őszén Nagybányára költöztünk, ahol édesapám a Phoenix gyár berendezési részlegén dolgozott.
My late parents, Berta (Grosfeld) and Josef Herskovits, represent two proud Jewish family traditions. My earliest memories are of growing up in the small village of Bârgău, where I was born in 1930. We lived a hard but decent rural life. I still remember both the pleasures and the challenges of those early days. Our home was always open to members of our extended family, and on holidays, we often had a full house.
In the fall of 1938, we moved to Baia Mare, where my late father worked in the equipment division at Phoenix. I would often bring him lunch just to see him, since he left early for work and returned late. Alongside my parents and my grandfather, the late Meyer Herskovits, our household also included two of my cousins—Yonathan Frank and Laci Gottesman—as well as my uncle, Josef Grosfeld. I have very fond memories of those days. I deeply loved and enjoyed my relationships with all members of my family.
I recall the typical experiences of childhood: attending school, family life, and friendships with classmates. I especially enjoyed the activities of the local Zionist Youth organization, playing football, and cheering for our local team.
In 1940, the Hungarian occupation began, and restrictions on Jews grew increasingly severe. By 1944, we were forced into the local ghetto and later transported to Auschwitz. After the selection process and a brief stay, I was shipped to Mauthausen and then to Ebensee, where I remained for about a year until liberation on May 5, 1945.
I was fortunate to survive—one of very few in my age group. To this day, I cannot comprehend why the Germans inflicted such evil upon us Jews. How could such acts of inhumanity be carried out in the supposedly enlightened Europe of that time? Why did the leaders of the Western world stand by? And how did I manage to survive?
I dedicate this page to the memory of all members of my extended family and others who lost their lives at the hands of the Nazi murderers and their collaborators.
May they rest in peace, and may their memories never be forgotten.
