Közülük mindössze ketten élték túl: Kálmán Margó, aki túlélte a náci koncentrációs táborokat, valamint testvére, József, akinek sikerült megszöknie a munkaszolgálatos alakulatból.

According to historical records, a Jewish merchant named Mihály Kálmán lived in the village of Remetea Chioarului(Maramureș county, Romania), together with his wife, Reiza. They owned a general store, but they were also involved in producing pálinka (a traditional fruit brandy), making fruit preserves, and harvesting timber from the nearby forests.

Out of the 1,198 inhabitants recorded in 1941, forty identified themselves as Jewish. In 1944, all of them were deported by the Hungarian authorities. Only two individuals survived: Margó Kálmán, who endured the Nazi concentration camps, and her brother, József, who managed to escape from a forced labor detachment.

Some of the non-Jewish locals tried to hide the Kálmán family in the forest. However, Mihály Kálmán refused their offer, choosing instead to remain with the other Jewish residents of the village. After the war, no Jewish families returned to live in Remetea Chioarului.
