Freund Béni

Freund Béni s-a născut în anul 1894 în Baia Mare, atunci în comitatul Sătmar. A fost un croitor de la care au învățat meserie foarte mulți tineri din oraș și împrejurimi. Atelierul și casa lui se afla în actuala Piața Păcii. A fost căsătorit cu Kahan Paula și au avut doi băieți, Sándor și Lázár. Întreaga familie a fost deportată în mai 1944 de autoritățile maghiare. Au ajuns în lagărul de exterminare Auschwitz-Birkenau unde Béni, Paula și Sándor au fost uciși. Singurul supraviețuitor a fost Lázár, care după război s-a stabilit în Oradea unde a fost contabilul comunității de evrei. Portretul lui Béni este parte a expoziției Vecinii mei, evreii.

Freund Béni 1894-ben született Nagybányán (Románia), akkor Szatmár vármegye. Szabó volt, akitől sok fiatal tanulta meg a szakmát. Műhelye és háza a mai Szabdság téren (Szent Miklós akkor) volt. Felesége Kahan Paula volt, két fiúgyermekük született, Sándor és Lázár. Az egész családot 1944 májusában deportálták a magyar hatóságok. Megérkeztek az auschwitz-birkenaui megsemmisítő táborba, ahol Bénit, Paulát és Sándort meggyilkolták. Az egyetlen túlélő Lázár volt, aki a háború után Nagyváradon telepedett le és a zsidó hitközség könyvelője lett. Béni portréja a Szomszédaim, a zsidók című kiállítás része.

Freund Béni was born in 1894 in Baia Mare (Romania), then in Sătmar county. He was a tailor from whom many young people from the city and its surroundings learned the trade. His workshop and house were located in today’s Păcii Square. He was married to Kahan Paula and they had two boys, Sándor and Lázár. The entire family was deported in May 1944 by the Hungarian authorities. They arrived at the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp where Béni, Paula and Sándor were murdered. The only survivor was Lázár, who after the war settled in Oradea where he become the accountant of the Jewish community. Béni’s portrait is part of the exhibition My Neighbors, the Jews.
