The Jewish community in the villages of Gârdani and Sălsig, Maramureș county, Romania

In 1850, the village of Gârdani only had 4 Jews; however, their number rose to 56 by 1910.

Most were farmers, such as landowner Zseni Tevjovits and his family who lived in the local mansion. David and Moshe Israel were also engaged in agriculture.

Saje Berge and Samuel Markovits were colonial traders, Moshe Aron Weisz had a shop and a tavern, and Avraham Szinaj traded in old clothes.

In 1944 they were gathered and taken to the Cehei ghetto, and from there they were sent to Auschwitz. Most were killed there.

In 1850, the village of Sălsig had 32 Jews. By 1910, their number rose to 77.

We notice some names like Dr. Marton Mozes, doctor, Schlesinger, bus owner, Jozsef  David Goldenberg and Moshe Groszfeld, colonial traders, Ignac Goldenberg farmer and colonial trader, Herskovits and David Samuel who were shoemakers or farmers Jisaj Mozes and Pinchasz Goldenberg.

Their lives were abruptly ended in 1944, when they were deported to the Cehei camp and from there to certain death in Auschwitz.

Most were killed there. Today, Jews no longer live in the two adjoining villages.
